What a hidden gem. Great homemade American diner food. Way better than your average Coney Island. Our family comes here a few times a month and we are always treated well and the food is always delicious. Personal favorites are the southern burrito (scrambled eggs, cheese, sausage, peppers & onions wrapped in a tortilla and smothered with sausage gravy), Gina's special (chicken tenders, lettuce, tomato, cheese and ranch wrapped in a pita) and their chicken noodle soup rivals my own! My husband loves any of their specials (today's meatball sub was fantastic) and my daughter thinks their chicken parm and French fries are the best. Definitely the place for comfort food!

My friend lives on the same block and seeing how yelp has good reviews we came here for brunch. The place is your typically diner. Nothing too fancy. A lot of booths with a couple tables and a counter top. No need to worry about having to wait in line. We both got coffee and they came over to refill once during our dining experience. We weren't there for that long so once was just right. My friend got the short stakes of the sweet cream pancakes. I had a bite and it was pretty darn tasty. Unique and wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. I got the meat lover's skillet. It comes with toast. It was so much food it was enough for two meals! Good deal. Overall, it was good. I don't know if I would go out of my way to eat here but if I am in the area sure why not! Take your bill up front to pay. They do not accept american express.

Been here a few times for breakfast. Farmers omelet was good. The eggs Benedict was also above average. Hash-browns on point and not too greasy.

This weeks episode of Fancy Breakfast Thursday took us to an area of Royal Oak without many restaurants. We decided to try the Royal Cafe of Royal Oak on Campbell between 11 and 12 Mile Roads. The signs out front declared new ownership and it looked nice so we thought we'd give it a go. First, the waitress approached our table, introduced herself by name and said that she'd be our server and she asked what we wanted to drink. Both my friend and I noticed the professionalism of this and it was nice that she took her job seriously. Second, the place is clean and spotless. It's a small place but with big roomy booths that are comfortable. The place is also non-smoking which made for a nice environment. Third, the menu is huge. It's got all the diner favorites, and then it has all of the special items of a Detroit-area Coney Island restaurant. On top of this it has many Polish food items. The menu had polish sausage, a Polish food plate, perogies and more. The breakfast was a typical breakfast menu, served all day. I had eggs, hash browns, toast and pancakes all for $6. The order was correct and perfectly prepared. Other options include omelets with interesting items such as feta and gyro meat, or polish sausage or all vegetables. You can replace hash browns with grits or sliced tomato if you want. I would definitely go back here again if I want an inexpensive, but delicious meal. There is so much on the menu that it would be difficult not to find something you like. The difficulty would be deciding what to order.

First time here and actually only came here because the diner down the road was so packed, we were starving and didn't want to wait. Lots of breakfast specials on the board and our waitress was very happy to describe each one to us. We settled on sharing a savory and a sweet. The sweet was from the special board-stuffed french toast. I was 1/2 expecting over the top sweet excessiveness but instead got a very light french toast with cream cheese and strawberries (possibly jam). Very yummy I might add. For the savory we selected the platter with 3 eggs, hash browns, pancakes, ham, sausage and bacon along with a wonderful marble rye toast. I am always hesitant to order eggs the way I really like them--over easy. I usually opt for scrambled, I mean who can really screw up scrambled?? Anyway, we ordered the eggs over easy and they were perfection! The pancakes also were delightful, maybe vanilla added? Very tasty food and yes, typical diner-no frills here. I appreciated that the noise level was low enough to carry on a conversation and actually hear the person seated across from you. No TVs playing multiple channels, just pleasant background music. The waitstaff was excellent--friendly, helpful, efficient. We will be back!

What a great place for breakfast or lunch! Clean and neat, with a fast and friendly staff. What more can I say!

Best. Pancakes. Ever. This was my first visit, but it absolutely will not be my last. I ordered the Southern Belle (I think that's what it was called) - sausage and biscuits topped with 2 eggs - and it was delicious. Hubby ordered the sweet cream pancakes, and next time I will, too. Perfect texture - a bit crispy on the outside and fluffy and tender inside. And perfect taste - slightly sweet with a buttery mouth-feel. YUM! Decent coffee and friendly efficient service, round out the trifecta of breakfast requirements. If it's as good the next time I go, this little place might need 5 stars.

Quaint little place. Owner is very kind and attentive. Gets to know her customers. Food was good. Eggs benedict were a little over cooked but still had good flavor. Sweet cream pancakes are good (kind of small compared to other places). Had several flies buzzing around which was kind of annoying. I will definitely go back and try something else. I think the at-home-feel will grow on me.

Small spot great for Sat or Sun morning breakfast! I usually get the southern skillet and it's more than enough food for half the day.

Breakfast is always amazing. I love little diners like these they always have the best food! Val and Nina are very nice ,funny, and attentive.

Happened on royal diner by passing and it was really well done food. If you're ever nearby... Drop in for a solid breakfast.

This place has great food! They have really good breakfast. You get your food fast. It's also a good amount of food.

Royal diner is like a best kept secret tucked away in an unassuming spot. I was amazed with the true homestyle service there and I was equally amazed with my lunch. I had their yankee melt and it wad on point. My friend had the western omelette and lets just say I know what I will be ordering for breakfast next time. There a lot of choices in royal oak with downtown and all but I highly recommend taking a trip off the beaten path to a real homestyle diner where the food is great and where your business is appreciated.

A great place to have a quick breakfast. Their sweet cream pancakes, french toast, corned beef hash and chicken fried steak are all excellent.

Royal Diner has GREAT breakfast food. Pete's French toast is amazing- it's a special they have once in awhile that's French toast dipped in cinnamon sugar. My boyfriend is a huge fan of the meat lover's skillet, which I've tasted and also really like. If you're going for lunch, be sure to get a side of cole slaw. It's absolutely amazing. Their wings are also pretty good.

Took my 5 yr old boy here after church last Sunday afternoon around 1:30 and I was told that we just missed the big rush (thank God!). Nice little spot, really clean, SUPER staff, good and creative specials, food was o.k. They get 4 stars for not beating the shit out of my kid and for taking very good care of us. Our server was beyond pretty and was totally getting hassled by this clown next to us at the bar (he had absolutely NO GAME) and I felt really sorry for her......but dig this, not only was she an expert at dodging this idiot but she actually apologized to US because she thought this asshat was disturbing our breakfast. She was downright awesome....

This is probably our favorite breakfast spot. We also go there for dinner after soccer. The owners are always there and very friendly. The atmosphere is very casual and inviting. The prices are not super cheap but then again you get very good food and large portions. The tuna melt is fantastic!
(4)Emily M.
I drive past this place daily, and finally decided to try it. I was told they have the best pancakes in Michigan, and I would have to agree! Their sweetcream pancakes were delicious! This place is a little hidden gem! SO cute and the service was excellent! I will definitely be back!

Love this place for breakfast. I haven't tried them for lunch or dinner yet - but the menu looks great there too. I love that it's family run and everything has a home cooked taste to it. Their skillets are really good, great pancakes, good coffee, and really good service.

I was craving a meat lovers skillet and decided to try somewhere new. This place showed up on Yelp and I am so pleased it did. The meat lovers skillet was amazing. Bacon, ham, sausage, cheese, eggs, and hash browns. If my carry out order was amazing I can only imagine dining in. I would definitely eat from there again. Nice staff too.

Where do I begin? My friend and I went here not too long ago to eat breakfast together. "It's got four Yelp Stars" he told me with vigor. I shook my head like a metronome. "Ok" I said. Let's do it. So we strapped my son into his car and off we went. First impressions....Dirty lil diner. Okay. I can handle that. Some really good food comes from places like these. But... The baby highchairs were so incredibly sticky, I couldn't even move the buckles. When I tried to buckle my son in, the clips were broken. I thought about tying it around my sons belly, but...I didn't. My hands came away with a visible gluey like substance, that I could only assume was years old, gelatinized food. Pop was flat, but cold. But best for last....There was a HUGE cook's hair in my omelette. At first, I tried to deal, but when the cook walked out of the kitchen and I realized he didn't have a hair net on at all, I knew I could not finish my food. My friend was gracious and traded with me, but I mean...I knew it came from the same cook...so...I stuck to the toast. Which is all really sad because the waitress, who im pretty sure owns the place is just so sweet....She just must not have a cleaning bone in her body. I'd liken eating here to eating at a restaurant in a different country. They have wigglier tendencies when it comes to sanitization.

Went to Royal Cafe for Sunday breakfast with my sweetie, and had a pretty bad experience with our waitress. The food was solid and very reasonably priced. My husband had a gyro omlette that was fantastic and huge. He didn't get hungry again until dinner time. I ordered "homemade" corned beef hash and was served canned corned beef hash with 2 perfectly cooked eggs. It was good and I ate it all. Our waitress never came back to our table, but the hostess came back when we were pretty much finished and refreshed out drinks. I never hold food against a server unless they add to the problem, so I just casually asked her if the corned beef hash was homemade. I knew it wasn't but was trying to fish for a little information. She told me that the did make homemade, but that they also had canned for people who liked it and when she picked up my ticket our original waitress had written canned on our order. The hostess seemed pretty nice and I might have dropped it, but our original waitress was standing by the cash register when I went up to pay. I mentioned that she messed up her order and she said, "I don't know what they cook" so I asked her to apologize for messing up our order. Three times during our conversation I asked her to apologize and finally she said, "it's not like I'm not sorry." I'm not one to complain like this in my reviews, but in the end, I feel like I can't go back there and everything else about the experience was really good except for this person. Even the canned corned beef hash was a decent breakfast.

Kinda like the little places I grew up with. Food is always good. It's the type of place you roll out of bed and show up to start the day.

"Excuse me! Flo?" is what I want to say every time I eat here. This is a great example of a neighborhood place. The staff are great and attentive and although I've only ever had breakfast, its good and priced pretty well. I would imagine that lunch and dinner are good based on the crowds for breakfast. As with most small diner type places they have early bird specials for dirt cheap. I know this place have been a handful of different places and the location isn't the best, I hope this place continues to thrive.
